THANKS SO MUCH
for sharing
Kathleen Parrish’s candid thoughts
in “Why I Run” (August 2008,
pa g e
174).
It’s been quite a few years
since my short-lived “career” in
high school cross country. Now
I’m in my mid-30s and the mother
of six kids under 12. Kathleen’s
perseverance is just the push out
the door I needed. Dusting off the
joggingstrollcr and my running
shoes will probably be the easy
part, but it’s good to know that it’s
not impossible to pick up where
I left off 10 years ago.

REGARDING YOUR STORY
“Sweet
Send-Offs” (August 2008, page
180),
our son started college away
from home a few years ago when
he was only 14. We asked the
college to room him in the dorm
with an older student who knew
his age and was willing to help
him through the rough transition.
He wanted to come home the
first week, so we took it a week
at a time and drove to the college
every weekend for a year, just
asking him to try it for one more
week at each visit. His sophomore
year we barely heard a peep out
of him. He has told us many times
how grateful he is that we did
not let him quit that first week.
Parents need to discuss this with
their kids before they leave home.

TO MR. SAINT-O NGE:
I am very
impressed with your particular
decorating makeovers. It is the
main reason I read the magazine.
I would like to request the room
sizes of the places you redo. I
moved a few years ago to a rather
small adult community-type
townhousc and it would help,
since I’ve been buying and making
mistakes with furniture and
decorating—something I never
had a problem with before.

I ENJOYED READING
about Slizie
and Bob Mecay’s all-white-interior
home (“Some Like It White,” July
2008,
page 39).
After living in a
windows-on-one-side condo for
12 years I’m delighted to have
white interior walls. I didn’t
realize all the light I had been
missing. I used to burn lights
constantly just to be able to see.
Now with the white walls the
eastern sun reflects the light and I
am a happier person. The colorful
pictures I paint using black frames
in my bedroom is enough, with
colorful bedding and curtains.

l HAVE RECEIVED
your magazine
for several years and enjoy it
very much. I do have one com-
plaint. You constantly show
homes with white or painted
woodwork, which isn’t very
helpful for those of us who have
natural wood-stained woodwork
in our homes. We need some
inspirational ideas too!

I WANT TO COMMENT
on the letter
written not long ago regardingthe
article “Silver Polish” (March 2008,
p a g e 118).
I agree with the person
who wrote to say she had let her
hair go naturally gray. I recently did
the same and have never received
so many compliments. We are what
we are. Many thanks to all who have
complimented me and also for all
women who have accepted
themselves for who they are.
